Essay 3: An ethical chemical engineer
When you do a certain work, you have to be responsible for your work. When I chose to become a chemical engineer, I have decided I am going to be an ethical chemical engineer. You have been paid $ 67,500 for a year is to be responsible with your job, community and society. The money paid must accompany honesty, integrity, seriously, inquiring on the job. Some small mistakes in your work could cause large disasters. Do you think if your mistakes caused oil spill incident at the oil refinery, how many people will be affected and the environment will be polluted like? In the worst case, how many people will die? If you are a biochemical engineer, the food which you researched is allowed to have a negative effect or side effects to consumer`s health? The answer is never accepted. So please become an ethical chemical engineer and if not then abandon this job!
The attribute which I think is most important for being an ethical chemical engineer is that “Hold paramount the safety, health and welfare of the public and protect the environment in performance of their professional duties”. Because we work to create us own value and contribute to the community. We make products (for example: gasoline, biofuels, bio-food, etc.) to serve the community. So in the work process, chemical engineers need to respect the safety and health of people. Today environment is increasing degraded and polluted. We need to take responsibility for improving the environment better and if not, we haven’t to do it more polluted.
In Vietnam, people have little information about the technology of chemical engineering and my parents and my friends are too. When I decided to study to become a chemical engineer, I have asked my family and my friends. They said that it is associated with the petroleum (oil refinery) or chemicals, pharmaceutical product. They think this job is dangerous, strenuous and noxious because it uses more chemicals, but this job has high-income. In Vietnam, this job’s average income is only lower than the bank’s income and some other business sectors. I think people have too little information about this profession. We contribute for society. We research clean fuels, pharmaceutical product, bio-food, new materials (polymers, composites, etc.). I agree with comments saying that this job is dangerous and noxious. We regularly contact with chemicals because we research it, we have to conduct many experiments to test theories or research results or this is just a part of the research process. So accidents are always able to happen.
