HOME WORK #1
1. Interpret production of Ethylene-glycol (EG) from synthesis gas via dimethyl oxalate
2. Draw block diagram of EG from synthesis gas via dimethyl oxalate
3. Comment on advantage and disadvantage of hydration, carbonylation and Shell OMEGA technologies.
- Hydration
+ Advantages: Conventional process
feedstock Ethylene is common chemical product
+ Disadvantage: By-product excess
Low yield, low selectivity
C02 excess proplem
Carbonylation:
+ Advantage For area has less oil but has large potential of syngas
High yiel
+ Disadvantage Water excess
Cost much catalyst and set up reactor
Shell omega
+ Advantage high yield, high purity, high selectivity, non by-product, less cost
CO2 is recycle
+ Disadvantage Need much equipment
4. Interpretation of Shell- OMEGA technology for Ethylene-glycol (EG) manufacturing
In the OMEGA process, the ethylene oxide reacts with (CO2) to yield (C3H4O3). Ethylene carbonate is subsequently hydrolyzed to mono-ethylene glycol and carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide is released in this step again and can be fed back into the process circuit. This process is 99.5% selective for mono-ethylene glycol2
C2H4O + CO2 → C3H4O3
C3H4O3 + H2O → HOC2H4OH + CO2
5. Draw block diagram of EG production from ethylene by hydration of ethylene oxide
6. Draw block diagram of EG based on Shell OMEGA technology by ethylene carbonation using CO2.
